The future of the republicans
已更新:2021年3月22日
The republican party was once the party of hope in the US. The party led by Lincoln was the party that campaigned on the abolishment of slavery and various new and advanced ideas. The party was represented progressive ideas for a long time and has been the party that called for a free and fair society. However, the party has changed overtime and is now facing an internal split that is threatening the party's future.

The republican party was founded by Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents of America in its history. The republicans was the result of the split in the whigs party due to the American expansion westward and the question on wether the new states joining the country should permit slavery. The democrats in the South are strong supporters of slavery while the whip party is split on the problem. A fraction of the whip party fear that as more slave states join the country, it could brake the balance of the numbers of slave states and free states which could hurt the interest of white workers in the North and thus hurt the interest of the Northern industries. Later, the right wing and the left wing of the whig party split and the party ceased to exist. In this era, the progressive fraction in the whig party later formed their own party called the republican party that will prevent slavery from expanding westward and hurting the interest of free white industrial labours. The republican party gains more and more popularity in the North due to their progressive and pro industrial policy and won the 1961 election by a landslide. The leader of the republicans at that time was Abraham Lincoln. The south, discontent with the election outcome, announced their independence and established the confederate state of America. The North won the civil war due to the high productivity of the Northern industry and the overwhelming population which marks a big and positive advancement in American history led by the republican party. The republican party later led the fight to preserve the fair right for Southern slaves who have been recently freed due to the abolishment of slavery. However, the republican party experienced a big shift in policy in the reconstruction era after the civil war. Some former slave owners and a lot of Northern business man found opportunity in a refreshed economy due to the civil war and thus fought their way to the top. The families include John Pierpont Morgan, John Davison Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, etc. They all became the "governor" of different sectors of economy including the iron industry, the oil industry, the railway, stock market... As they gain a vast amount of wealth, these businessmen started to find ways to secure their asset which includes gaining power. These big business got into politics and became the de facto leaders of different political parties which include the republican party. In 1920s, the republicans have already became the party dominated by rich businessmen. This was proofed to be a successful strategy during the developing years of the economy but not so well during the great depression. The popularity of the republicans popularity plummeted due to the unsuccessful handling of the great depression by the republican president Hoover. The democrats led by FDR, one of the greatest president in American history, turns out to save the country by strong government intervention which expands the government's role. In the 50s and the 60s, the civil rights movement swept the country and it is the democrat president Linden Johnson who signed the civil rights act. At that time, the democrats have been strong advocate for big government while the republicans have been advocating for small government. In the 50s and the 60s, the civil rights movement shook America and it's the democrat president Linden Johnson who signed the civil rights act which marked a major shift in policy of two different parties. Overtime, a traditional republican clan led by the Bush family, Mitch McConnell, etc have been leading the party for decades. However, everything is about to change in 2016.

After the civil rights movement, the republican party have became the advocate for traditional and conservative policy while the democratic party have experienced a shift from white supremacy to progressive policies. The traditional clan led by the Bush family, Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney while other republican politicians have been leading the government since. They are commonly called the country club republicans. However, there is another fraction of the party represented by politicians like Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan. These two fractions have been battling for the control of the party for years, But the internal fighting has became more and more intense as Trump leaves office.
Country club republicans have long being the norm of the party. they tend to hold a moderate view on social and economic policies while leaning a bit more right wing than the democrats. These people represent the big business and are sometimes big business them self. They have their fine share of public support with 48,886,597 votes in the 1988 election where the republicans presidential candidate, one of the most typical country club republican Gorge HW Bush. The country club republicans often come in family and their family forms a clan that spans from business to politics. Most current republican politicians are the member of a political or business clan such as the Romney clan. They are what the public often perceive as the traditional "politicians".

Another fraction is the "grassroots" fraction of the republican party. This fraction are represented by Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. This fraction have a more extreme view on social and political issues and lean more right to the country club republicans. The politicians in this fraction have a lot of people who have lesser experience in politics then the country club republicans who grew up and spent most of their professional life doing politics. Ronald Reagan used to be an actor while Donald Trump was a New York playboy and a business man who like to have his name on almost every piece of his estate. (at least that is what he wants us to see). This fraction is the fraction that have more extreme slogans and can attract more voters.

This two fraction in the republican party have a long history of conflicts ranging from political issues to personal issues. The country club represents the political and economic clan and holds a more moderate view of their policies. The other fraction does have their own clans and big business, but they campaigned on a platform that is increasingly populist and less conventional which threatened the basic interest of the country club republicans which led to the conflict. This is why when Donald trump was still preserving his so called voter fraud claim, he got little support from the republican conventional politicians. However, the "grass-roots" got the popularity. about seventy million votes goes to Donald Trump making him the winner of the second most ballots in American history which showed the popularity of the "grass-root" republicans largely because the populist platform that Tump campaigned on was attractive to social conservatives. Thus, you can see that CPAC, the largest gathering of conservatives is basically a playground for Trump supporters. The republican party now have a choice to make. If the country club republicans completely gives up on Trump, then they are going to lose a titanic fraction of their vote that will potentially damage their election future in the long run. However, given the status that Trump is in, it would be impossible for the republican party to be accepted by the mainstream society if they stick to the Trump era.
